Dorothy Allison is one of my favorite authors, and I really think everyone should read at least her book Bastard Out of Carolina, but also the books Trash, which is short stories, and Skin: talking about sex, class, and literature.
I've been thinking alot about how and why people figure out how to change their lives, how to have fulfilling lives, how to enact personal and social change. And I love how Dorothy talks about feminism, especially because she was coming from the background that she came from. It was like opening your eyes under water. she says, It hurt, but suddenly everything that had been dark and mysterious became visible and open to change.

I am in Arizona right now, and the simple fact that people live here in this desert with hardly any water, and golf courses and green grass, and how fast it is growing... the whole thing is depressing and disgusting, and I wish I was somewhere that made more sense and seemed more hopeful.
